United Way of Payne County 2024 Community Status Report

CHILDCARE It is estimated that out of 5,402 children under the age of six in Payne County, 66%, or 3,588, had all parents in the labor force. This number increased to 84% for children between six and seventeen years of age.

The Center for American Progress estimates that 55% of Oklahomans live in a childcare desert with that number increasing to 57% for Hispanic/Latino families and 68% for rural families. A childcare desert is defined by the Center for American Progress as: Any census tract with more than 50 children under age five that contains either no childcare providers or so few options that there are more than three times as many children as licensed childcare slots.
