Shifting Gears: From Managing to Leading

Dr. Matthew Bowler — Director of the MBA Program and Associate Professor of Management in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University

Many experts are calling for the greater use of leadership skills in organizations. The problem is that while these skills sound great, do managers have time to perform them? Managers have to deal with many immediate problems and issues and this leaves them little time to lead. One big reason that managers have no time for leadership is that they spend time directing and controlling employees. This seminar is designed to help managers break-the-cycle by providing them with tools needed to become leaders. The key is for managers to shift most of their management responsibilities to their employees, thus leaving them more time to lead. Contrary to what some people believe, empowerment enhances a manager’s power by shifting the source of the power from command and control to leadership. This seminar is designed to help employees move more into self-leadership. This seminar is sponsored by the Department of Management and the Center for Executive and Professional Development in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University. Participants earn 0.6 continuing education units (CEUs) upon completion of this seminar.
