Becoming a Better Communicator: Introduction to Social Style and Versatility

Jennifer Coonce — Assistant Professor of Professional Practice in the Department of Management at the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University

Have you ever wondered why you find it easier to work with some people but not others? We often find it naturally easier to communicate with some people over others. Our first tendency is to reduce this issue to personality conflicts, but what if there were a system you could learn that could show you the secret to getting along better with everyone you encounter at work? What if differences you encounter in your interactions can be affected more powerfully by focusing on behavior, not just personality? Social Style and Versatility teaches individuals how to predict others’ behavior and what to do to make the relationship more productive. This seminar will teach you how to create productive relationships with a wider range of people in the workplace. Social Style, simply put, is the pattern of behavior you use when you interact with others in the workplace. Versatility refers to a system of small adjustments you can make to accommodate other people’s behavioral preferences, thus becoming a more effective communicator. Versatility is a learnable skill that allows you to increase the support and respect you receive from others at work. Versatility teaches you to focus on making small behavioral adjustments that reduce the natural tension that exists between different people. You will learn simple, in-the-moment behavioral decisions to earn the support and respect of the people you work with. Leaders, team members, and individual contributors who learn Social Style and Versatility can expect the following outcomes: • Better overall performance • Earn trust faster and be more helpful to peers • Manage conflict more effectively • Build stronger relationships • Promotion potential • Work well within a team • Lead a team more effectively • Increased ability to coach others • Impact engagement of direct reports

In the end, you will leave this seminar knowing what to do to make all of your working relationships more pro- ductive and how to be a better communicator.
