Leadership by Question

Dr. Matthew Bowler — Director of the MBA Program and Associate Professor of Management in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University

So often, we think of leadership as happening in grandiose statements made behind podiums. However, leader- ship is something that happens more in small groups and one-on-one interactions. Leadership is more effective when the leader asks thoughtfully crafted, strategically positioned, and well-timed questions. Questions engage people, show that you value people, get people to develop their own creative solutions, and create a learning environment. However, most don’t know the value or technique of leading through the use of questions. Participants will be better able to lead individuals, teams, and conduct meetings using questions to build consensus and commitment while building social power and developing leaders, rather than consuming their power and influence.

New concepts and applications learned: • Difference between leading through statements and questions • How to lead with questions • Practice using questions in everyday life

Benefits: Participants will be better able to lead by engaging people through questions rather than statements. This will enhance their ability to lead individuals, teams and meetings. Participants will also be equipped to help other become better leaders by using questions as part of their leadership style. This seminar will teach new and experienced leaders: • Importance of using questions in leading people • How to create questions to lead others in face-to-face, written, and virtual environments • When to ask questions • Methods of using well worded, well-timed and well-positioned questions in leading people • How to get questions asked by others in meetings and groups • Practice creating and asking powerful questions that will successfully lead others • Benefits and outcomes of using questions
