Mental Wellness: Creating Mental Wellness Literacy

Dr. Marjorie A. Erdmann — Director, Center for Health Systems Innovation, Lecturer at Spears School of Business and College of Osteopathic Medicine

Work is a powerful contributor to our mental wellness. More and more employers are embracing their role in the mental wellness of their employees to achieve a high performing workforce, especially in the face of our current national mental health crisis. What is often not addressed is instilling a basic literacy of mental health and brain functioning and teaching methods to communicate about mental health. In this workshop we aim to gain a collective language and framework for mental health, important realizations about how our brains work, and provide tips to discuss and manage mental health in the workplace. We are often uncomfortable talking about mental wellness. The first step is having shared frameworks to think about, evaluate and even talk about mental health. We will explore mental health frameworks in an effort to understand differing categories. We will discuss what are known sources for mental wellness and known inhibitors. We will unpack stress’ complex association with increasing and decreasing mental wellness. Participants will practice thinking about and evaluating their own mental wellness and sources of it. Module 2: Your Brain at Work: Brain Functioning Fundamentals We Should All Know • While we know a significant amount about how many of our human systems work, literacy about how our brains work is surprisingly low. Next, we will discover basics about how our brains make sense of the world around us and protect us. This will shed light on our emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. Participants will engage in activities that reveal their brains at work. We will discuss the brain and common mental statuses such as pain, burnout, happiness, satisfaction, and boredom. Module 1: Mental Wellness: What is it? Where does it come from? • We will wrap up by discussing tips on how to talk about, ask about and manage mental health in the workplace. Key to this dis- cussion is evaluating what the current culture is for doing so, trust in HR, and the reality of resource availability. To help advance a positive culture around mental wellness, participants will learn 3 guiding rules to sharing about mental health and 3 guiding rules to managing mental health discussions. These modules’ objective is to provide participants with basic tools to understand themselves and their coworkers, building resiliency and interpersonal skills. The trainings include engaging activities that create learning moments and discussion points. » KORN FERRY COMPETENCIES Communicates effectively | Demonstrates self-awareness | Interpersonal savvy | Instills Trust | Self-development Module 3: Managing Mental Health Issues in the Workplace •
